HEC is a surface-crosslinked powder, which results in delayed solubility. In cold water with a neutral PH or PH below 7, it disperses evenly into fine particle, then slowly hydrating into a transparent solution with varying viscosities. The dissolution process can be accelerated by raising the water temperature or adding a small amount of alkaline substances (e.g, AMP95) to adjust the PH to 7.0-8.5.

What is HEC in Coatings?

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) is a non-ionic, water-soluble cellulose ether widely used as a rheology modifier in water-based coating systems.

It is commonly applied in:

  • Emulsion paints
  • Acrylic water-based coatings
  • Latex paint systems
  • Architectural and industrial coatings

HEC is not only a thickener—it is a flow-structure regulator for multi-phase coating systems.

Benefits:

  • Excellent Thickening & Water Retention: Enhances viscosity and prevents water loss, improving paint consistency.
  • Suspension & Dispersion: Effectively suspends and disperses pigments and inorganic fillers, preventing settling.
Enhanced Stability: Improves suspension stability, ensuring a uniform paint mixture.
  • Improved Color Acceptance: Helps achieve better color uniformity and intensity in coatings.
  • Excellent Rheological Property: Maintaining suitable viscosity under both high and low shear conditions, facilitating improved brushing and spraying performance in applications like paints and coatings.

Hydrophobically Modified Associative HEC | LANDU

Hydrophobically Modified Associative HEC

The Associative type is a hydrophobically modifiedassociative HEC. It is a polymer colloidal solutionwith a dual thickening effect. Like ordinary HECproducts, it achieves the thickening of thewater-based latex system through conventionalhydrogen bonding and molecular entanglement. Atthe same time, it also associates with the latexparticles in the coating to produce a dual thickeningeffect, which can provide good construction perfor-mance and excellent anti-spattering.

Application Feedback from Water-Based Coating Systems

In practical coating formulations, HEC performance is consistently evaluated in real production environments rather than laboratory conditions alone.

Interior Wall Paint Systems | LANDU

Formulators report that HEC provides stable viscosity during storage and reduces pigment settling in long-term warehouse conditions.
It also improves roller application smoothness, especially in mid-viscosity emulsion paints.

Exterior Architectural Coatings | LANDU HEC for Coatings

In exterior systems exposed to temperature fluctuations, HEC helps maintain consistent rheology and prevents sagging on vertical substrates during application.

High-PVC Decorative Coatings | LANDU HEC for Coatings

In high pigment volume concentration systems, HEC contributes to structural stability of the pigment network, reducing separation and improving hiding consistency.

FAQs - LANDU HEC for Coatings

Everything you need to know about LANDU's HEC production and quality control

1. Why does paint viscosity decrease after storage?

Viscosity loss is usually related to incomplete hydration, unstable rheology structure, or temperature fluctuations during storage. In some emulsion systems, improper thickener dispersion may also reduce long-term viscosity stability.

2. How much HEC is typically used in water-based paint?

Most water-based coating systems use around 0.2%–0.8% HEC, depending on PVC level, application method, and target viscosity. Higher dosage does not always improve performance. Excessive thickener levels may reduce leveling and increase brush drag.

3. Why does pigment settling still occur in emulsion paint?

Settling problems are often caused by insufficient low-shear structural viscosity rather than low viscosity alone. This issue is more common in high-PVC formulations and systems exposed to long-term warehouse storage conditions.

4. What causes poor leveling during roller application?

Poor leveling is commonly linked to excessive low-shear viscosity or incorrect rheology balance. In many interior wall coatings, medium-viscosity systems provide smoother roller application and more uniform surface appearance than overly high-viscosity structures.

5. Why does coating viscosity vary between production batches?

Batch-to-batch viscosity variation is often related to inconsistent hydration conditions, mixing sequence, or rheology tolerance differences between thickener systems. For large-scale coating production, many manufacturers evaluate hydration predictability alongside viscosity value itself. LANDU coating-grade HEC systems are designed to support more stable rheology development during production.

6. What happens if HEC is added too quickly during mixing?

Improper addition may cause agglomeration and incomplete hydration, leading to unstable viscosity development or visible lumps in the coating system. In industrial production, dispersion sequence and mixing time are usually carefully controlled to improve final formulation consistency.

8. What is the difference between low and high viscosity HEC grades?

Low viscosity grades are generally used in spray coatings and low-build systems where flow and atomization are important. High viscosity grades are more suitable for anti-sag, textured, and high-build coating systems requiring stronger structural stability during application. LANDU HEC grades for coatings are typically selected according to application method and rheology target rather than viscosity value alone.
