What is HPMC Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose?
HPMC falls into the category of non-ionic cellulose ethers. It is produced by chemically modifying natural cellulose from wood or cotton, starting with methylcellulose as a base material. By adding hydroxypropyl groups (-OCH₂CHOHCH₂), HPMC takes on the combined properties of both methyl and hydroxypropyl substituents. Non-surface-treated HPMC can dissolve directly in water immediately, forming a viscous solution. It is suitable for applications requiring instant thickness or binding, such as ceramic tile adhesive, wall putty, EIFS systems, and self-leveling compounds.
2. Surface-treated HPMC
Surface-treated HPMC is modified to delay its dissolution in water. This treatment is applied to control the hydration rate, making it suitable for applications where delayed solubility is needed for better performance, such as personal care and home care detergents.
