Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) is a highly substituted, nonionic, water-soluble polymer and a semi-synthetic high-molecular surfactant. It is a white or light yellow, odorless, fibrous, or powdery solid prepared by the etherification reaction of basic cellulose and ethylene oxide (or chloroethanol).

What Is The Difference Between HPMC and HEC(Hydroxyethyl Cellulose)?

HEC demonstrates better film-forming capabilities than HPMC, beneficial for coatings and adhesives.
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose has a broader pH stability range compared to HPMC, remaining stable within the PH range of 2 to 12.
HEC is soluble in both hot and cold water and does not precipitate at high temperatures or when boiled, which endows it with a wide range of solubility and viscosity characteristics, as well as non-thermogelling properties. While HPMC is readily soluble in cold water, it is difficult to dissolve in hot water.

How is Hydroxyethyl Cellulose Soluble in Water?

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose can be dissolved in hot or cold water. After adding hydroxyethyl cellulose, continuous stirring must be carried out until the solution is completely transparent and clear. It must be slowly sieved into the mixing bucket. Do not add large quantities of hydroxyethyl cellulose or directly add it into the mixing bucket that has formed lumps and balls. Water temperature and PH value in water have a significant relationship with the dissolution of hydroxyethyl cellulose, which requires special attention.
